Tylum design studio

OUR COMPANY

Designing spaces
with intention.

Tylum is a Kuala Lumpur design studio where work moves slowly and carefully, shaped around the particular qualities of each space we encounter.

OUR STORY

Where Tylum comes from

Tylum was founded in Kuala Lumpur with one specific frustration in mind: too many interior projects treat light as an afterthought — something to be handled by an electrician near the end, rather than something to be understood at the very beginning. Our founders had worked in architectural practices and residential design for years before deciding to build something smaller and more deliberate.

The studio takes its name from a quiet moment — the way a shadow falls across a wall in the late afternoon and makes the room feel different from how it looked at noon. That kind of attention to how a space changes with time is what we carry into every project.

We work with homeowners, developers, and commercial clients across the Klang Valley. Our studio is based in Bukit Damansara, and we keep our client list intentionally manageable so that each project gets the focus it deserves.

Our mission

To shape interiors that feel genuinely suited to the people who inhabit them — spaces built around light, proportion, and material rather than trends or templates.

Our values

  • Observation before prescription — we look closely before we suggest
  • Transparency at every stage of a project
  • Restraint — we add only what a space truly needs

HOW WE WORK

Our quality standards

Site observation protocol

Every project begins with a structured site observation — we visit at different times of day and record how light conditions, shadow angles, and spatial proportions actually behave.

Documented specifications

All design decisions are recorded in a detailed specification package — materials, dimensions, lighting positions, and supplier contacts — so the project is never dependent on memory.

Client data protection

We handle all client information with care and discretion. Property details, personal preferences, and communications are kept confidential and are never shared without consent.

Contractor accountability

When managing projects, we work only with contractors we have experience with. Site reviews are conducted at key milestones to ensure the design intent is being followed through.

Material sourcing ethics

We give preference to locally sourced and responsibly manufactured materials. Malaysia has excellent timber, stone, and textile suppliers, and we work with them wherever appropriate.

Clear client communication

We provide written summaries after each project stage and are available to answer questions between sessions. No unexplained changes, no jargon that obscures decisions.

WHAT WE STAND FOR

Interior design that works with what is already there

Kuala Lumpur's climate and geography produce light that moves differently from elsewhere — the angle of the sun, the frequency of overcast days, the way rain diffuses afternoon brightness. Designing interiors here means understanding those conditions, not importing solutions developed for other climates. Tylum's design practice is rooted in close observation of Malaysian spaces.

We work across residential and commercial projects — apartments in Mont Kiara, houses in Bangsar, villas in Damansara, and studio offices where the quality of the working environment matters. Each space presents its own set of conditions, and our job is to understand them before making any proposals.

Our approach draws on spatial planning, material knowledge, and lighting design — three disciplines that we treat as inseparable. When these are considered together, the result is a space that feels coherent and comfortable, rather than a collection of stylistic choices placed side by side.
